No One Talks About This Relationship—But It Runs Your Whole Life

Let’s talk about the most important relationship you’ll ever have—the one that shapes your thoughts, choices, and experiences more than any other.
The one constant in your life, from sunup to sundown, through every high and low.

Yep. It’s you.

The relationship you have with yourself is, above all other relationships, the most important.

Before you roll your eyes and click away, bear with me for a second.

Look, I get it. Since you were a kid you’ve been told that you should focus on every other relationship, but not the one you have with you. You’ve been taught to prioritize others’ needs before your own. The notion of prioritizing your own needs above others? It sends shockwaves of fear of being perceived or labeled as selfish through your bones.

No wonder we’re in an epidemic of codependency and people-pleasing. We’ve been collectively conditioned—culturally, socially, emotionally—to ignore our own needs.

And of course this absolutely is going to effect your self-relationship.

Think about it, when your needs aren’t being met in other relationships in your life, perhaps with your partner or BFF, you feel it. It impacts not only your feelings towards the person, but also the way in which you interact and communicate with them.

So how is this any different when it comes to you, yourself and you!?

When I talk to clients about this, all too often the sheer idea of a relationship with self can be novel and seemingly unnecessary… except that it is arguably the most important element of your life and one that is with you literally allllll the time.

I mean, who are you literally with every moment of every day?

Think about it. Your relationship with yourself is the central, most integral, interconnected relationship that you will ever have. It is the literal common denominator in all other relationships you share. The relationship you have with yourself is absolutely impacting every other relationship in your life. So why is it so hard to focus on? Why does it all too easily fall to the bottom of your priorities list?

Consider this...

What will you always be told during the safety instructions on an airplane? If the oxygen masks are deployed you must put on your own mask before helping others, right? This is, perhaps, one of my very favorite metaphors for all of life, because come on people, if you’re not getting oxygen you sure as shit are not going to be able to help anyone else breathe.

So why are you doing this in your every day life?

I dare you to change this. To make a shift and start focusing on your own relationship with YOU.

You, as a human, will be better able to meet the needs of others when you are first able to meet your own.

 xoxo,

Sammy
