Think Relationships Are Just About Other People? Think Again.

I think we can all agree that being a human is one of the most challenging things we’ll ever do.

Of all the elements of this whole human experience thing, relationships are some of the most difficult, beautiful, and rewarding. Not just with others—but especially with ourselves.

When you think about it, relationship is the central theme of being human.

It’s the glue that holds everything together.

We relate to everything around us, every day, all the time.

Relationships are what intertwine us, connect us—to each other and to the universe.

But relationships aren’t just limited to people.

When most people hear the word relationship, they usually think of one of two things: either being “in a relationship” in the romantic sense, or the bond they have with other people—family, friends, coworkers, etc.

And while yes, those are integral parts of life, I think it’s equally important to consider how we relate to everything around us.

Think about it. Outside of your personal relationships, you also have relationships with your work, your home, your pets, your thoughts, your words, your habits, your routines, your responsibilities, your hobbies.

Every part of your life involves relating.

And the one common thread in all of these relationships… is you.

Your core values. Your beliefs. Your emotions. These not only shape your relationships, but are shaped by them in return.

So how do you notice this showing up in your life?

When was the last time you paused to reflect on how your relationships might be impacting your well-being?

If you’re not sure how to answer that—or don’t even know where to begin—I got you.

Here are some journaling prompts to help you explore and deepen your self-awareness around your relationships:

  • Which relationships do you consider most influential in your life?

  • What do you value most in your personal relationships?

  • What do you value most in your non-personal relationships (i.e. your work, home, routine, etc.)?

  • How do you notice your core values and beliefs impacting your relationships?

  • How do you notice your relationships impacting your core values and beliefs?

  • How might your relationships with others be affecting your relationship with yourself?

  • How might your relationship with yourself be affecting your relationships with others?
